چکیده

Immunity has been considered one of the most specific of biologic reactions and it has been assumed that an infection induced by one organism within a closely related group does not immunize against another organism of the same group. The recent studies of Weil, Felix, and Olitzki suggest strongly that there is a group immunity between typhoid and enteritidis infections. The results here reported are based upon experiments made in an attempt to determine whether a crossed immunity exists between B. typhosus and B. enteritidis infections. In studies bearing upon the interrelationship of immunity phenomena two methods of approach are available; first, the serological method which is designed to show certain common factors in serologic response; second, crossed protection tests, such as would demonstrate an actual increased resistance to infection. Needless to say, the first of these methods has very largely been the method of choice, solely because of its relative simplicity and despite the fact that for a long time the validity of conclusions based upon this method has been subject to more or less criticism. In the studies here reported both of these methods have been applied. The first part of the paper deals with serology, and the agglutination reactions between B. typhosus and B. enteritidis are shown. In addition, and perhaps of greater importance, are the results of the bactericidal effect of immune sera on the two organisms. The second part of the paper deals with animal protection tests. That the serological method, as applied to the problem, might serve in some measure to show the common character of the immunities induced by the two bacterial types under consideration was suggested by some of the recent reports dealing with organisms of this general class. The contributions of greatest significance are

On Precipitable Substances Derived from Bacillus Typhosus and Bacillus Paratyphosus B

Attempts to confirm certain statements that ether-soluble specific substances can be obtained from B. typhosus have lead to negative results. Two serologically active protein substances and another that was non-protein have been separated from B. typhosus. The first two are not resistant to tryptic digestion or to treatment with alkaline hypochlorite solution whereas the third resists both. One...

The Immunizing Value for Mice of Vaccines Prepared from R and S B. Enteritidis *

Although the questions of immunity induced by bacterial vaccines and of the type of vaccine best suited to the purpose have received a wealth of attention, renewed interest in this aspect of immunology has become manifest since the basic differences between smooth and rough bacterial strains have become recognized. That such qualities as smoothness and roughness are more than superficial and ac...

The Somatic Agglutinin and Immunity in Mouse Typhoid *

That the degree of immunity to B. enteritidis infection induced by enteritidis (acetone-killed and heat-killed) and by typhoid (acetone-killed) vaccines does not correlate with the content of the O agglutinin to appear in the sera of the immunized groups has been reported3. It was further shown that although both types of the enteritidis vaccine excited the formation of 0 agglutinins to nearly ...

Phenomenon of Local Skin Reactivity to Bacillus Tuberculosis

New toxic substances in certain tuberculin, O.T., and B. typhosus culture filtrates are described. These substances are capable of eliciting the hemorrhagic necrosis characteristic of the phenomenon of local skin reactivity provided heterologous bacterial filtrates of high potency are used either for the intradermal or the intravenous injection. The toxic substances apparently have no relations...

Optimization of Salmonella enterica serovar typhi DeltaaroC DeltassaV derivatives as vehicles for delivering heterologous antigens by chromosomal integration and in vivo inducible promoters.

Novel candidate live oral vaccines based on a Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi ZH9 (Ty2 DeltaaroC DeltassaV) derivative that directed the expression of either the B subunit of Escherichia coli heat-labile toxin or hepatitis B virus core antigen from the bacterial chromosome using the in vivo inducible ssaG promoter were constructed. The levels of attenuation of the two S. enterica serovar Typh...
